Class Descriptions

BALLET: A classical form of dance that provides a strong, solid technical base for all other dance forms. These very technical classes consist of barre, center floor and progressions across the floor.

JAZZ: Fun, upbeat style of dance that stems from ballet and combines today's stylish moves with energetic, popular music. Jazz focuses on core strength, flexibility and technique.

TAP: A truly American style of dance, tap challenges students to integrate rhuythmic patterns using their feet as the instrument. Tap focuses on beat, timing, rhythm and coordination.

HIP HOP: Fun and energetic freestyle dance form that has evolved from break dancing, street dancing, urban and jazz into one of the most popular forms today.  All hip hop at RISPA is taught and performed with positive music.

TLC HIP HOP: A fun and energized Hip Hop class specifically for special needs students age 9 and up.

MUSICAL THEATRE: Incorporating elements of dance, acting/self expression, voice and performing techniques,  students learn what it would be like to be a Broadway star.

CREATIVE DANCE: Developed especially for preschoolers, our Creative Dance program is taught in a joyful environment making dance a fun experience and provides our youngest students with a strong foundation in dance and movement. While learning the basics of classroom behavior and manners, the class introduces students to the elements of dance (hopping, skipping, jumping), beat and time, musical rhythm, simplified ballet steps, limbering exercises, coordination skills, left and right discrimination, and patterns of movement. Integrated with these physical concepts are the intellectual concepts of self-awareness, creative expression, teamwork, and self-confidence.

LYRICAL: Contemporary style of dance, based on ballet technique, using form and dance to tell a story.

BOYS HIP HOP: Since most of RISPA students are girls, a boys hip hop class is offered for the young men who wish to be in a boys only group where the physicality may be more demanding and different from a girls group in some ways. As with all RISPA hip hop classes, only positive music will be used.

STAGECOACH: This is a three-hour program encompassing a combination of dancing, acting and singing. This program is structured to strengthen the talents of students who wish to perform in more than one category of the performing arts. Midweek Stage Coach meets for two hours.

MINI STAGECOACH: This program is a two-hour Saturday morning program 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon, covering dance, musical theatre.

ON CAMERA: Students cover acting technique, characterization, projection, and presentation, using the benefit of video and our green screen for feedback. This is a non-recital calss and will not perform in the recital.

PRE-COMPANY Classes in Hip Hop, Tap, and Ballet/Tap are for those students wishing to gear up for auditions to join our Company Competition Team.

RISPA offers Company membership in all of the major dance categories: Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Modern, Acting and Voice plus a Mini Company for the very young students. Company membership is awarded to those who pass an audition and are committed to attend Company classes and rehearsals. Company members have two shows per year and participate in a spring competition.

RCT, RISPA CHILDREN'S THEATRE: Our mission is to give each child the opportunity to explore, encourage, and engage their passion for theatre and the performing arts. The RCT program requires no previous experience, but does require the drive to perform and grow as a performer. Ages 7-15.
